but meat is not the only thing we eat so it’s not a big problem. I think we just don’t move as much as we used to.

    Yes, people have …
Yes, people have been farming for a long time, but farming practices have changed. Now more people are eating more meat (i.e. McDonalds). This is because family farms are on the decline and factory farms are on the rise. animals do not lead a natural life anymore and are getting diseases from overcrowding and being treated with modern medicine. Ppl are now eating large quantities of meat from diseased animals laden with antibiotics and growth hormones. Centuries ago this was not the case.

Conclusion from above sources: saturated fat negatively affects the immune system.

Here are a couple sources – couldn’t fit them into the last post

Han et al. Effect of hydrogenated and saturated, relative to polyunsaturated, fat on immune and inflammatory responses of adults with moderate hypercholesterolemia. J Lipid Research 2002; 43: 445.

Levy J, Ibrahim A, Shirai T, Ohta K, Nawasawa R, Yoshida H, et al. Dietary fat affects immune response, production of antiviral factors, and immune complex disease in NZB/NZW mice. PNAS 1982; 79: 1974-78.

    My previous …
My previous comments were in response to ManyMovements’ statement that “the fat in meat helps to protect you from cancer and viruses.” I wasn’t trying to link heart disease to diets high in saturated fat (that’s been well established), but to point out (to ManyMovements) that fat negatively affects the immune system. I’m not a big proponent of nutritional/dietary immunology, but data just doesn’t support the above statement….

    ASSUMING what …
ASSUMING what 09Terp says is correct, he/she is linking heart disease to diets high in saturated fats (we know that), not directly meat it self. Secondly most of the population eat meat and have done for centuries and centuries. Farming of livestock is not something that has been introduced recently like the smoking of nicotine (relatively speaking). As 09Terp said, there are so many variables in the human body we cannot link for sure that meat is directly related to cancer.

    Indeed, though I …
Indeed, though I never suggested only eating lettuce as many have assumed. I suppose it was naive to even begin this discussion, I just wanted to see if anyone had a valid and convincing reason not to be vegan (once all of the misconceptions and myths were cleared). I’ve never yet heard one…

  11. aaandsm Says:

    This is an opinion …
This is an opinion video about weightloss/toning or whatever. Nutrition is actually considered science by some, but I notice they didn’t provide references to support their statements. See 09Terp’s evidence linking consumption of meat to heart disease and one cancer. I have provided health reasons for not eating meat, but since they’ve been ignored for the past few decades, just like smoking warnings… Maybe the heavy metals, pus, hormones, and antibiotics in meat help the body look good…

fyi iceberg lettuce’s nutriants are lame, youre pretty much chomping on nuritant water-get yourself darker greens they’re better for you

  13. Hoontae Says:

So you want us to …
So you want us to eat dehydrated iceberg lettuce as our ‘rich’ source of protien? either way i think you are straying from the topic in question, your reasons that u mentioned for not eating meats is an ethical one to which there is no need to argue that here. we all make decisions on how we choose to live our life (religion, to be vegan) to which you dont have control of, and you need to respect people’s decisions no matter how much you disagree. This video is about nutrition, nothing else!

  14. positivecynic86 Says:

    You’ld have to eat …
You’ld have to eat a whole lot of iceberg lettuce to get even a reasonable amount of protein. Maybe you should have chosen a more balanced metaphor if you intended to convince youtube trolls . . . being a vegetarian/vegan is a nice idea though :)

Oh and I do know …
Oh and I do know that correlation does not prove causation but it does suggest more research needs to be done. Frankly I do not have time to dive into the literature to find actual evidence either way. My purpose of posting was to mention one reason diet soda MAY be harmful to weight loss goals. I admit it is a hypothesis and may be found to be untrue but it is out there as a concern.

  17. Lynxie77 Says:

    @tiffanyvelvet I …
@tiffanyvelvet I agree that insulin release is controlled by a complex system. I also agree that most of the info I have mentioned is based on hypothesis’s however I don’t think it should be discarded solely because they have not found concrete evidence. There is a release of insulin via the cephalic phase but unfortunately at this point it is not clear if it is benign or could cause problems. The truth is there is a positive correlation that people who consume diet soda gain weight.

    do we have teeth …
do we have teeth like other “omnivores” like bears and foxes? Or carnivores like cats? Can you catch and kill an animal with your hands and ferocious incisors? Would you rather eat a freshly killed deer at the side of the road raw or an apple raw?

  22. aaandsm Says:

    Again, I have to …
Again, I have to disagree. I think that iceberg lettuce is a better source of protein than fish and chicken. Why? Because the protein in lettuce was not once part of a sentient being. A being that more likely than not, was forced to lead a very unnatural and painful existence before its untimely death to provide us with “a good source of protein.” You said it yourself, among many other foods, beans and nuts are rich in protein. Why eat meat then…?
